Megas
   In the first part of a title it means "supreme," or "grand." Alexios I Komnenos (q.v.) introduced its use for the important office of megas doux who commanded the navy (q.v.). Loukas Notaras and Alexios Apokaukos (qq.v.) held this post. The 11th century also saw the office of megas domestikos (supreme military commander) replace that of domestikos ton scholon (q.v.). The megas logothetes (grand logothete) administered the entire civil administration.
